Now that you are all aware of my fascination and obsession passion for Parisienne style, I should share my ultimate Paris shopping experience, which was fittingly the final destination and last stop on our Paris agenda…the one and only Galleries Lafayette! Needless to say my outfit had to be perfect. I settled on my MNG black jeans, vintage belt belt (this time courtesy of my mother) Zu cubans, a black and white pinstripe Zara shirt, Cue black blazer and finished the look with my Basler cashmere and leather scarf and a dainty silver necklace with Eiffel Tower charm (why not?). The result left me feeling suitably fashionable and “Parisienne” wandering around the incredible building that houses 6 mammoth levels of girly heaven with awe inspiring views of the iconic stained glass dome from every level.
We started on -1 in what seemed like a shoe museum. Every colour, shape, style and embellishment imaginable was on impeccable display – from towering pumps and killer stilettos (hello Jimmy Choo) to adorable ballet flats and midi boots. We then made our way to the parfumerie, cosmetics and accessories level…where I made a petite SeeByChloe bag ALL mine! Perfectly sized (serviceable for everyday, work and play) in black butter soft leather, it sat on it’s illuminated shelf marked “New Season” screaming my name. I figured what better purchase to make in Paris than a classic designer bag? And being the younger sister brand of French icon Chloe it all seemed rather fortuitous. (As I write this it is sitting comfortably next to me looking oh so adorable…).
After I smugly swiped my card and was handed my new baby all packaged and bagged in white with fluro pink string handles it was off to admire the breathtaking panoramic views of the Eiffel tower and Sacre Coeur from the rooftop and line our tummies with a quick feed to sustain the serious afternoon of shopping ahead.
Following a saumon quiche, fresh salade de legume and baguette with beurre we made our way to level 4 – entirely dedicated to lingerie. Not only that but they had a lingerie atelier set up in the middle making alterations or even bras to measure! Only in Paris. Purchasing French lingerie was a must on my list and after trawling through endless styles, hues and cuts I found the perfect matching set in classic black lace with sheer details. Although the real highlight were the opulent fitting rooms…
After wandering through designer, midrange brands and the departments own collection we needed a coffee and cake break. Fortunately, Angelina’s (who else?) was located on level 2. A cappuccino and brightly coloured “Babylon” later it was back to trawling.
I fittingly completed my Galleries Lafayette shopping experience with a 100% cashmere short-sleeved black sweater. Practical, classic and quintessentially French it came from the Lafayette range (really what large international department store can you leave without buying from their line of clothes?). Close to 8 hours spent on 6 levels of shopping heaven, housing not only hundreds of brands showcasing clothes, accessories, undergarments, souvenirs, toys and stationery but also several cafes, a champagne bar, a hairdresser and spa as well as an art exhibition, it’s no small wonder its the second most visited Parisian tourist destination after the Eiffel Tower! Thank goodness it’s tax-free…
