When it comes to expert coffee you’re spoilt for choice in Fortitude Valley. Reverends Fine Coffee (read my Concrete Playground review here), Bang Bang Lulu, Arthouse Coffee, Battery Station, Fonzie Abbott and a dozen other boutique venues all call this area home. But if its coffee appreciation and education you seek LTD Espresso is for you.
Tucked down the top end of Brunswick street neighbouring Giadinettos is this small hole-in-the-wall coffee boutique (it was a shoe store in a previous life) decked out with an indie-electric mix of jam jar light fittings, a jigsaw puzzle veneered coffee bar, exactly 9 different sized mirrors and a hand painted band of misfit characters queuing up for their caffeine fix on the wall behind.
The guys here are exactly what you’d expect – denim-apron-donning, welcoming and chatty coffee aficionados.
Joshua and Luke were the baristas the day I visited. Joshua kindly took the time to explain their philosophy –
“Here we’re about education. We like to recommend each of our blends based on the type of coffee you order…it’s nice to have some control sometimes, for example if you had our Panama blend in a cappuccino you just wouldn’t taste it – it’s designed to be enjoyed as a macchiato or straight black.”
My cappuccino, made on old school blend, was poured to precision with competition standard latte art. The milk was exactly the right temperature and drinkability? 10/10.
I will definitely need to return for one of their unique specialties – a shot of cold brew (which is their Passport blend mixed with water and takes approximately 24 hours to properly prepare) served on ice with Capi sparking mineral water. Aptly named “Black Diamond” – because it’s black coffee and it sparkles (but of course!) – it’s definitely on the must try list. As is its brother, the “Blood Diamond” served on Capi ginger beer.
For tastings, your early morning fix or a shot before you head out for the evening (they are open til 6pm on a Saturday!) LTD Espresso knows good coffee. Clearly the resident lego men think so too…
