Now this may come as a surprise given the post title…but last Thursday morning I did not go to Reef Seafood + Sushi at Gasworks to enjoy delicious snapper with lemon butter like this one (yup I ‘grammed that) but rather, was lucky enough to be at the official launch of their new breakfast menu!
Ideally located at Gasworks, Teneriffe with full view of the old gas ring, Reef serves market fresh seafood either raw for take home or made to order for both dine in and takeaway. With an Oyster Bar catering to the masses, as well as a seriously epic assortment of sushi, sashimi boats and nori rolls, this place is your one stop seafood and fish shop (they also do awesome thick cut salty chips). So it was no small wonder their breakfast menu also featured some wonderfully creative fresh seafood options such as the Crab Omelette, Salmon Omelette, Smoked Salmon with Poached Eggs and hollandaise or for the more adventurous the “Breakfast Bento Box” complete with miso and rice.
Seated together with fellow Brisbane foodies, bloggers and instagramers at gorgeously adorned tables (think white tablecloths and stunning feature flower arrangements) we started with a selection of fresh juices, of which there are 3 to choose from. The Pink Juice – watermelon, apple, lime and mint, the Green Juice – kale, cucumber, celery, lemon and ginger and the Red Juice – beetroot, carrot, apple and mint – and all came in adorable miniature milk bottles with candy striped straws!
While most at the table opted for savoury options (the Crab Omelette to my right once cut open spilt flaky succulent crab flesh and just looked superb, while the Bacon and Poached Eggs with hollandaise that arrived opposite simply oozed sunny yellow yolk once the white flesh was pierced and the cod roe that topped the Salmon Omelette glistened like orange pearls of salty goodness), I myself decided on something different...
Instead, I settled on the Organic Bircher with organic quinoa flakes and oats soaked in organic oat milk, a smidge of apple juice and organic yoghurt with smatterings of pepitas and nuts throughout and topped with luscious fresh berries. I know, I know sacrilege for a seafood specialist venue but I am a muesli/oats/porridge addict and have a serious problem ordering anything else for my morning meal…luckily for me Reef is just as proficient in the realms of sweet options as they are at dishing up delicious seafood.
The quinoa and oats were the perfect texture – still holding shape but soft and gooey. The creaminess of the oat milk together with the zing of tartness from those fresh berries? HEAVEN! Plump raspberries, beautiful hearts of half strawberries and small pops of gorgeous blue blueberries littered the top of the generous blob of quinoa. Taking a bit of everything in the one mouthful was perfection and everything a bircher should be – zingy, light but creamy and filling. Clearly others thought it looked pretty good too…
The concept of breakfast at Reef is all about healthy, fresh produce, cooked simply and deliciously (think Acai bowls, high protein, low carb meals and fresh juice combos) that will have early risers champing at the bit for more and delight the areas’ gym frequenters. Owner Greg and his highly skilled team (including Japanese chefs) will surprise and delight you with the menu they have constructed.
Many thanks to Reef Seafood + Sushi and felix&slinkpr for a wonderful morning with lovely people and fabulous food (and of course simply stunning floral arrangements). Next work breakfast meeting venue is sorted!
What would you have? Seafood or something else? (FYI the Crab Omelette is next on my hit list!)
