At only 20 and 22 years respectively, Sarah Therese Miller and Keziah Judith Ruth Bossley are part of a new generation of young entrepreneurs here in Brisbane – paving the way by establishing their own successful business a little more than a year ago. Since its conception, Kiss The Berry has grown from a simple market stall at Eagle Farm Markets where they served delicious acai bowls to loyalists every Sunday morning, to a full blown retail store on Creek Street in the Brisbane CBD. Their menu range of various healthy acai bowls and smoothies as well as other superfood combinations multiplied tenfold in the transition and city goers can also purchase Kiss The Berry‘s own blend of coffee and granola in store. I was lucky to catch the girls just after they celebrated Kiss The Berry’s first birthday to get the lowdown on how it all started and what we KTB crazed fans (and if you’re not already just check out my previous Kiss The Berry review post) might be able to expect next…
First and foremost a huge congratulations on the incredible success of Kiss The Berry in a relatively short amount of time! Has it felt like a complete whirlwind or a long time coming?
S & K: Thank you so much! It has been a very fast-tracked year, we have come a long way in that amount of time. In saying that though, it hasn’t felt like a year at all, much shorter than a year actually!
Can you tell me more about how it all came to fruition? How did you start out?
S & K: We wanted to bring healthy eating and looking after your body to the forefront for Brisbane. In the beginning the idea was to be a food-truck based operation but we knew the business would only be a success if it had some brand awareness first. We decided to do this by doing the markets and it just boomed from there!
What made you decide to start your own business? Was there a defining moment?
K: We had always said to one another that we would open a venue, but things got serious when Sarah came across an idea. We both knew that we wanted to lead extraordinary lives. We wanted to use our youth to our advantage and leave a footprint on how people fuel their bodies and how they treat their bodies. We are very lucky to have been able to find passion and joy in how we lead our everyday lives.
Being acai specialists seems like quite a niche offering – did you identify a gap in the market when it came to deciding on your core product?
S: After being introduced to acai, we realised how many health benefits this berry has! Because of it’s properties and what the actual berry can do for you, we wanted to make others aware of it as well.
What exactly is your food philosophy? Where do you get your inspiration? Do you enjoy playing with recipes and combinations?
S & K: We like to surround ourselves with other health conscious people because we are constantly inspired by them. We are always with our personal trainer and friend who is studying nutritional medicine, we learn so much from them. Then we just play around with different ingredients and see what flavours work and what [combinations are] beneficial for our bodies.
What did you study and how long after studies did you start Kiss The Berry? How much has it evolved since the beginning?
S: I did a year of Design and Business and Keziah started Property Economics, however, we have both deferred. Once we have a bit more free time and things have settled down, we would like to go back and finish our degrees except this time I would like to do Nutrition!
It’s wonderful to see young individuals staying in their home cities and helping to grow and develop local enterprise. Do you think there are more opportunities here in Brisbane for young trailblazers to make their mark?
S & K: Of course! Anything is possible, you just have to set your mind to it and give it all you’ve got.
What do you love most about coming to work everyday? What is the best aspect of your job?
S & K: We love making people smile and just having a good time with us while they’re in store. At KTB we’re not just trying to sell you the product. We want to educate you on how to give your body the best nutrients, how to treat your body, we want to give you an experience when you’re with us. For some people, getting lunch with us is their only escape from the office and if we can make their day in the short amount of time that they’re in store, then we know they will be happy and enjoy the rest of their day.
Give us your KTB lowdown: What’s your favourite item on the menu?
S: My favourite is the low sugar bowl with coyo and berries! Coyo is actually life changing.
K: My favourite is forever changing from original, to snickers, to low sugar. The KTB bowl’s just aren’t complete without our specially formulated granola though! It is seriously the best granola ever and we aren’t just saying that because we’re bias.
Can you reveal any new menu items we might see soon?
S & K: Look forward to some more protein options and vitamin blends to add to your bowl. We know it’s hard to give your body all the vitamins and minerals you need everyday so if you add it to your bowl you have one less thing to worry about.
You’re obviously very passionate about what you do and this is evident in the team you have working for you as well. It’s like one big Kiss The Berry family! Are you particular about who you hire to represent the brand?
S & K: Honestly, positivity and happiness plays a very big part on our team in store. We make sure to always set a good mood whilst in store and it rubs off onto our team. We are very lucky to have them!
There has obviously been a lot of hard work that’s gone into developing the brand and I love your Kiss The Berry “Boot Camp and Breakfast”. What cool new collaborations can we expect next?
S & K: We’re going to run an eight week challenge! Summer’s coming up fast and we all want our bodies to be ready for then so keep an eye out on our Instagram and Facebook in the next few weeks.
You just celebrated your first birthday and have already expanded from the markets to your Creek Street store. Can we expect more Kiss The Berry stores to come?
S & K: Having only been open for 6 months our Creek St store is still relatively new [but] we are working on more stores to open!
Do you have an idol or someone whose successes or approach to life inspires you? Who would that be? Who have you learnt the most from in starting your own business?
K: Lorna Jane is a big inspiration as she is a Brisbane girl and she has formulated a whole brand, philosophy and movement. She has done it so well. With regards to Kiss The Berry, we have learnt the most from Jeff Miller – Sarah’s father. He has been with us every step of the way, teaching us about the finance side of things as well as always offering a different perspective on situations.
Are you Brisbane born and bred? What is it that you love most about this city?
S & K: Yes! We sure are. Brisbane is still up and coming, which means there is more opportunities and offers available than already developed cities. We are lucky we get to be a part of building Brisbane.
Where in Brisbane (aside from Kiss The Berry of course) do you love to go to for:
S & K: The Odyssey Project in Milton! The coffee is amazing there and the boys are great to have chats with.
A healthy breakfast?
S & K:Sourced Grocer in Teneriffe. We go every Sunday. The food is great and the vibes are awesome.
Superfoods and organics?
S & K: Sourced Grocer, again. We just love that place.
Finally, what piece of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs looking to start their own business?
Never let negative words bring you down. Make sure you know what you want to do, keep your focus on that point and don’t stop until you get there!
