Straight up, I’m a gym junkie. Completely exercise obsessed and addicted to the endorphin buzz, I have to start my day with a workout. Monday begins with boxing, Tuesday Kettleworx, Wednesdays Body Pump, Thursday GRIT (high intensity weight and plyometric training), Saturday I smash a double RPM (Les Mills cycle or spin class) with a Pump session and Sundays I GRIT…again. If you haven’t already gathered, yes I am a “classes” person…I need someone at the front of the room instructing me to MOVE.
I love my routine but sometimes to see results you need to shake things up. It wasn’t until my friend Vic adamantly told me I had to come and try this new gym she was going to that I thought, ok, fine I’ll come and try it on the 14 day free trial – we can smash a workout together and grab coffee after (I’m all for efficiency). Little did I realise, however, I would actually return day after day for the next 14 days to complete all 3 styles of classes the gym offered and request a direct debit form once my trial was over! Yup. F45 Functional Training in Newstead has me hooked.
A completely different style of workout to any class you’d find at the gym, the principle is to maximise your output with the most efficient and effective workout possible. Adopting the Tabata/HIIT/interval style of training, it takes the best of cross fit, traditional weight training and our old mate cardio to spike your heart rate continuously with “max on” periods (generally around 30-40 seconds) interspersed with rest periods (between 10 and 20 seconds).
Co-founded in Australia by Luke Istomin who helped train Hugh Jackman for Wolverine and celebs Nicole Richie, Ricky Martin and Russell Crowe just to name drop, the idea is simple. Members follow video taped demonstrations looped on plasma screens at various stations around the room whilst wearing POLAR Bluetooth heart rate monitor to track progress. Projected onto a large screen at one end of the gym you get to see exactly how hard you’re pushing your body, with your workout summary emailed to you at the end of each session.
With exercise combinations changing daily, there is no opportunity for your body to ever “get used” to a circuit – one session could see you skipping, rowing and sprinting, another you could be swinging kettle bells, squatting on a BOSU ball or lifting sandbags. With 10 specially designed programs in the F45 Training structure, the Newstead gym offers Athletica (their cardio circuit), Romans (their weights focused session) and Hollywood (mixing both cardio and weights – also my personal favourite).
Another reason this workout kicks butt? F45 sessions play dedicated DJ mixes that galvanise you with a “You’re sweating it out with F45!” shout out in between sets.
Finally, if the insanely addictive workouts don’t motivate you then F45 Newstead Directors/Founders/Trainers and Partners Nina Studenko and Drew Woodhouse certainly will! Previously in completely different industries (Nina managed medical centres for 10 years before one day, after another interview for another job she didn’t want, thought “why am I wasting my time when I know I don’t want to do this?!”) they made the decision in November last year to become licensees of F45. They flew down to Sydney to suss out what it was all about, signed the paperwork, quit their jobs in December and officially opened their Newstead studio on 31 January 2015.
Nothing went wrong. It was so strange…it was meant to be!
Clearly, another inspiring example when it comes to the way you view “career” and finding your calling (as summarised in my previous blog post). Nina’s passion and enthusiasm is definitely infectious – she encourages you to make every second count during your workout and her drop dead ah-maz-ing, get-out-you-are-a-mum?! body is an inspiration in itself.
I’ve been fit from a young age. It’s just part of my lifestyle. I did cross fit for 3 years, we’ve done triathlons and completed a Kokoda challenge. Physique and definition comes from having a well rounded workout regime and doing a bit of everything, which is what F45 offers. I love F45 because anyone can do it. 90% of the population aren’t doing fitness to become an athlete or to go pro, they do it to look good and feel good when they go out, so it’s great for the majority of people.
So whether you’re an exercise newbie or a gym-fiend looking for a new challenge then get your butt to F45 Functional Training at 13 Byres Street, Newstead. Each session is fun, fast and furious – leaving you energised and feeling amazing. Plus, if you’re after a more tailored personal training program then watch this space – Nina and Drew plan to expand their offering very soon…
Will you try F45 in 2015?
