I don’t know about you but I love going to the hairdresser. Being able to sit in a cushioned chair while someone takes control of the mousey-brown drabness (in my case anyway) is always a welcome occasion. It’s also a chance for some me time. And when you’re a working professional, constantly on the go racing from one thing to the next it’s nice to be forced to sit still for a few hours. Having said that, I put it off for the very same reason. It’s time, which is a precious commodity.
When I made my appointment for a long overdue cut, colour and blow-dry at ARC Hairdressing and Wine Bar in Ascot last week I really didn’t know what to expect…I just knew my hair needed attention. Two and a half hours later I emerged not only sporting a new ‘do but feeling relaxed, pampered and a little bit indulged.
So when was sitting comfortably in my chair with champagne in hand and cappuccino on its way, I spoke with Gary (creative director and owner of ARC) about what sets ARC Hairdressing and Wine Bar apart…
Hair aside, the interior design alone at ARC sets the tone for the next two and a half hours of appointment time. With a feature wall by graffiti artist Phin Tam Magee, super comfy lounge style chairs, a colour bar set in the middle of salon, a dedicated nails and makeup counter and of course the wooden paneled wine bar, it’s hard not to feel pampered.
“Our aim is to be a boutique salon, but with a relaxed atmosphere. Sit on the sofa or in the chair with a glass of champagne or a cup of herbal tea and enjoy the experience”.
ARC prides themselves on using the best in hair and skin care – with PETA friendly and paraben free Kevin Murphy products (a Melbourne born brand), Issada Cosmetics (a local Brisbane-based mineral makeup label) and hair treatments such formaldehyde-free BHave Smoothe™ Keratin Therapy, Gary is passionate about providing pure and natural products to his clients, whilst supporting local and Aussie-made.
Emma, a client of Gary’s who comes every few months to have her naturally curly hair keratin straightened, adores the products and treatments available.
“I’ve been to so many salons and tried so many products but ARC is the one I come back to…it’s the best money I’ve ever spent on hair. I’ve told everyone!”
My favourite products had to be the “tangle teezer” brush and Kevin Murphy “Young Again” treatment I was treated to during my massage.
The point of difference
You know when “wine bar” is in the name that you’re not going to be in for a typical salon visit. A glass of bubbly as you are pampered, primped and preened in the beauty department is what ARC is all about – offering something a bit special and a bit different. It’s not just a salon.
“Yes we’re a hair salon, but we’re a one stop shop. You can come here and have your hair, extensions, treatments, nails and make-up done in one go…you can book out the salon for special events as well. We do wedding packages, 50th birthdays and a few weeks ago we had a hen’s party preparing them for a day at the races”.
The small touches
Champagne. Cappucinos. A head and hand massage at the basin…need I say more?
The most important thing when it comes to running your own salon?
“Passion. I still get excited after all these years – it’s an evolving ever changing industry and we have more plans for the future…watch this space”.
Book an appointment at ARC Haircdressing & Wine Bar and two and a half hours later you’ll be floating out of Shop 3/146 Racecourse Road, sporting new hair and feeling relaxed.
